| spa |
dc.description.abstractenglish | The animal genetic potential is estimated through genetic evaluations, which can be performed by methodologies such as restricted maximum likelihood and GIBBS sampling, which help us to solve the equations of the mixed models and thus estimate variance components. In this study, genetic parameters (GP) were estimated for birth weight (BW) traits, weaning weight (WW), first-year weight (FYW), daily weight gaining between birth and weaning (DWG), and daily weight gaining between birth and its first year of life (YWG). The main objective was to compare REML (restricted maximum likelihood) methodologies and GIBBS sampling (Bayesian Inference), in a genetic evaluation for growth traits in Blanco Orejinegro (BON) and white Brahman (WB) livestock. We used productive and genealogical information from a cattle ranch called Bohemia located in the municipality of Virginia Risaralda of 571 Blanco Orejinegro (BON) and 711 Brahman (WB) animals. An animal univariate was implemented including fixed effects according to the evaluated traits as follows: for the BW: sex (S), birth year (BY), time of birth (TB), number of the birth (NB); For the WW: S, NB, weaning time (WT) and covariates BW and weaning age (WA); for the DWG and YWG: S, TB, NB; for FYW: First-year weight time (FYWT), S and WA as a covariate; as random effects, the additive genetic and the maternal genetic effect were considered for preweaning traits, estimating the genetic parameters with MTDF-REML and GIBBSF90 software. To establish which methodology was more efficient in estimating GP, we compared the estimated direct (h2a) and maternal heritabilities (h2m) with its respective standard errors (S.E.) for REML and the standard deviations (S.D.) for the GIBBS methodology; In addition, ranking correlations were performed between methodologies for the same trait within each breed. The h2a found in the BON breed for BW, WW, DWG, YWG, FYW by the REML methodology were 0.54 ± 0.15, 0.29 ± 0.12, 0.33 ± 0.13, 0.33 ± 0.14 y 0.36 ± 0.14, and by the GIBBS sampling methodology 0.49 ± 0.14, 0.29 ± 0.11, 0.32 ± 0.11, 0.33 ± 0.10 y 0.37 ± 0.12; the h2m using REML are: 0.16 ± 0.09, 0.05 ± 0.06, 0.07 ± 0.07, 0.20 ± 0.10 and GIBBS sampling 0.24 ± 0.09, 0.17 ± 0.08, 0.21 ± 0.09, 0.30 ± 0.09. For the Brahman breed, h2a were estimated by the REML methodology for BW, WW, DWG, YWG, FYW with values of 0.49 ± 0.23, 0.34 ± 0.28, 0.40 ± 0.21, 0.25 ± 0.24, 0.25 ± 0.14 and using GIBBS sampling methodology 0.22 ± 0.14, 0.44 ± 0.18, 0.32 ± 0.16, 0.29 ± 0.15, 0.28 ± 0.13. The h2m estimations through REML methodology were 0.16 ± 0.12, 0.04 ± 0.13, 0.22 ± 0.15, 0.29 ± 0.17 and by GIBBS sampling methodology 0.28 ± 0.11, 0.27 ± 0.11, 0.43 ± 0.15, 0.46 ± 0.15 respectively. All ranking correlations for each trait by breed were high and positive. In conclusion, the GIBBS sampling genetic evaluation methodology obtained more reliable estimates, with lower S.D.’s for h2a and h2m compared to the restricted maximum likelihood methodology in both study breeds. | spa |
