Introduction: Aquatic macroinvertebrates are important both in the bioindication of both water quality and physical alterations of aquatic systems, it is difficult to establish the type of variable responsible for changes in the structure of the community. Objective: Determine the habitat variables that condition the assembly of aquatic macroinvertebrate communities in some mountain currents of eastern Antioquia (Colombia). Methods: A sampling campaign was carried out during the dry-rain transition period in February 2021. Sampled variables were viewed in three types of mesohabitat: curls, pools and rapids. The macroinvertebrates were collected with a triangular network (mesh eye between 0.5 and 1 mm) and manual sampling on the different substrates and preserved with 70 % alcohol. The structure of the macroinvertebrates community was evaluated through emerging descriptors of the species association: composition, abundance and diversity of taxa. The variability between habitat was evaluated by ANOVA analysis and heat maps, the relationship between environmental variables and taxa distribution was evaluated by canonical discriminating analysis (CDA) and multidimensional escalation analysis (MDS). Results: 4484 macroinvertebrates were collected, grouped into 16 orders, 46 families and 75 genus, obtaining that the mesohabitat curls has greater values of wealth, abundance and diversity, followed by the rapids and finally the pools. The ANOVA analysis showed that there are significant differences (p <0.05) in the depth and speed between mesohábitat, as well as in the abundance of macroinvertebrates, while oxygen reveals significant differences by stream, but not by mesohabitat. The MDS analysis evidenced that the mesohabitat curls and rapids are more similar in terms of their physicochemical characteristics as are the most preference for the various orders of macroinvertebrates. The CDA analysis discriminated the habitat of pools of the curls and the rapids based on their composition, abundance and richness of macroinvertebrates, as well as in its physicochemical variables. Conclusion: The physical variables speed, depth, substrate and chemical variables such as oxygen, perform a very important role in establishing the communities of macroinvertebrates in different mesohabitats, but for the same type of mesohabitat, the quality of vegetation coverage conditions the both diversity and abundance of these communities.en
